About "You Eat Yet?"

“You Eat Yet?” is an ode to the shared experiences Asian-Canadians have with their parents/guardians when it comes to them showing their love and care. Flaunt It Movement's Asian Heritage Month (AHM) Campaign comprises a lunch-time potluck discussion inviting models of varying ethnicities across the Asian diaspora (South, East and Southeast). The purpose is to showcase the diverse food cultures and traditional clothing of various Asian cultures while demonstrating the many representations of what it means to "look Asian." The campaign aims to highlight one's relationship with their culture (through food and traditional garments) and to discuss the experiences we have or may share as Asian-Canadians.

The Importance & Symbolism of Food

While many Asians experience stereotypes surrounding pungent foods and strict parenting, this campaign highlights how these experiences represent tenderness, sacrifice, and nourishment, shaped by different migration stories to set better futures for their next generation.

“You Eat Yet” is a symbolic representation of broken English to tribute the many ways our families express love through food as a sign of an indirect “I love you.” Food is one of the many love languages that brings people together. In many Asian cultures, large family gatherings centred around shared meals are a common way to strengthen bonds and preserve traditions.

Stories Around the Table

Comprising a lunch potluck discussion, Flaunt-It invited models of varying ethnicities from South, East, and Southeast Asia to celebrate and represent what it means to “look Asian,” and to share conversational stories around the table. Sharing a safe space, these lived experiences are presented in an authentic, candid style to show the rawness and reality of different cultural upbringings.
